FAQs – Outdoor Signage

Outdoor signage must be able to withstand all types of weather. This means they need to be constructed from tough, weather-resistant material and firmly secured so as not to blow away in the wind.

Some of the most widely used materials for outdoor signage include:

  • PVC
  • Vinyl
  • Acrylic
  • Fabric
  • Wood

The right type of sign will be dependent on the use. For example, A PVC sign is ideal for short-term outdoor use – such as for a special event or promo. Vinyl signs are a great choice for the longer term, as are those made from acrylic. Wooden signs are popular for bespoke design, perhaps for shops that specialise in outdoor or rustic goods – and are also effective at creating an upmarket appearance.

Outdoor signs aren’t particularly maintenance-intensive, but they do require debris to be removed regularly. Dust, grit, dirt, cobwebs etc all build up over time and – if left – the sign will begin to look shabby. A monthly wipe with warm water and gentle soap should be all that’s needed to keep them in tip-top condition.

Wooden signs are the only exception to the rule. In addition to a monthly wipe down, these require varnishing or a suitable protective coating added once a year to keep them looking great and extend their longevity.

Outdoor signage is designed to last – and, with the right care, should last many years. The choice of material will be key, with vinyl being a standout choice if you’re looking for true longevity.

While you can have any font you like on an outdoor sign, the likelihood is that most tend to be read from quite a distance. While some fonts – particularly those that are very ornate - may look great close up, from far away there’s a risk that some letters might look very similar.

This can lead to signs being difficult to read or, even worse, communicating a message that’s far removed from what you intended. When deciding the font to use for your outdoor sign you should consider the following:

  • Readability.
  • Visibility.
  • That it’s eye-catching.

Plainer fonts tend to be the optimal choice for outdoor signs, rather than something too fancy.

Perth (and indeed the whole of Australia) is blessed with many hours of sunlight. The constant exposure to UV rays does have a detrimental effect, which is why Crystal Printing uses the highest grades of materials that are specifically designed for the climate and that will last for many years.

We certainly can and it’s a true area of our expertise. We have a dedicated team that will direct as much input as you require.
